Written in 1965, BALM IN GILEAD established Lanford Wilson as a major
American theatrical voice. In Lanford's play, echoing some of the spirit of Gorky's THE LOWER
DEPTHS, we see a group of young people confronting the city for the first time and being
blindsided by the fact that it is not all they had dreamed of. They appear to have lost the
battle, but they will not give in, they are struggling to survive.
